First Northern Bank and Trust is a true community bank.
Chartered on October 24th, 1907, with a capital stock of $25,000, First Northern Bank and Trust opened for business on January 6, 1908. As the Borough of Palmerton’s first financial institution, the Bank established its office in a small brick building on Delaware Avenue. In years to come, this same location would be home to the Palmerton Lighting Company and, more recently, a florist.
Responding to the economic boom of the roaring ’20s, the Bank expanded again in 1926, acquiring property and erecting a new building at Delaware Avenue and Fourth Street. The custom-designed facility was equipped with the most up-to-date equipment and conveniences and was considered to be the “very latest” in modern banking construction.
Over the next few decades, First Northern Bank and Trust stood the test of time, surviving the uncertainty of the Great Depression and the trials of World War II.
The 1950s brought a resurgence of consumer confidence and prosperity. Long-time bank employees took pride in providing a broad range of services to the children and grandchildren of their very first customers.
Along with disco and bell-bottoms, the ’70s introduced a focus on emerging technologies and planned growth strategies. Keeping in step with the times, the bank expanded and relocated in 1972, purchasing the former New Jersey Zinc - Horse Head Inn at the corner of Fourth Street and Lafayette Avenue. The old Delaware Avenue property was then donated to the Palmerton Library Association.
